Luau options

Breakfast was some celery/kale/apple jucie. Mmmmm...green goodness.

Lunch was from Bale (a Vietnamese restaurant). A veggie sandwich w/out mayo. The veggie sandwiches here are so good! All it is is cucumber, cilantro, and pickled carrot and daikon. I love it! Depending on which one you go, sometimes they add more things like jalapenos.

Yummy bubble drink with Thai iced tea. I am pretty sure they have these everywhere but just in case they don't, bubble drinks are drinks with large tapioca balls in the bottom. I actually had bubble drinks at my wedding.

Yesterday, I had to go to a graduation luau. Unfortunately for me, there is not a whole lot available for vegans at these things. Everything I did have, I love though. My menu from the top left is haupia (coconut dessert), poi (taro root pounded out and fermented), bananas and strawberries (stole from the dessert table), suman (sweet rice wrapped in banana leaves), and kimchi. I felt a little bad for the girl sitting across from me. She was a vegetarian, but a picky one. She only ate rice. She didn't want anything I had on my plate! Her lose!

  1. Oh, your sandwich looks most delicious!

I always get discouraged trying to piece together a meal at an event (although I've never been to a luau!). I usually try to eat first - maybe the girl you met had filled up ahead of time? If not, you're right - her loss, your plate looks good.

  2. Jessica- I know me too. Over here people have BBQ's and BIG parties a lot. It's always a little hard for me. Most everything is meat and the things that are not, have egg or milk in them. Booo...but I was happy with at least the few options I had. Poi is very nutritious too, so that helped.

  4. That sandwich looks so good! You just made me hungry right before bedtime - not fair! :D

I have never had a bubble drink, but I have always wondered what they're like.

You ended up finding quite a few yummy things to eat at the luau! The coconut dessert sounds most intriguing! :D

  7. River- Sorry! Haha :o) Bubble drinks are awesome! They are easy to make at home too. This site http://www.bubbleteasupply.com/store/store.php3?item_category=1&category_type=2

  8. Ali- Yes they are usually a meat fest. Normally I am stuck with rice and poi :) Vietnamese is so good. What are your favorites? I haven't had a whole lot yet. Any time I have extra kale and apples, I juice them. I love green juices!

  9. Com Chay is good (stir fried mixed veggies). We also like Pho made with tofu. Chuio Nuong (banana cake with cashews) which we can sometimes find vegan. We are lucky to have a few Vietnamese options.

  13. Never heard of a bubble drink...sure looks good though. I'm going to have to check that website out to see if I can make one myself. Looks like you made some good selections at the luau...the food looks great on your plate! My sister-n-law just got back from Hawaii and said the fresh fruits and veggeis were awesome there!

  15. I don't think I've ever had Vietnamese food...is that possible?!!? I like the idea of daikon on a sandwich. I've always wondered what to do with that veggie. I think I was more picky before going vegetarian and then vegan. At this point of my life I'll eat almost any vegetable and all fruits I've encountered.

  16. Michelle- if you like tapioca, you'll love bubble drinks! And yes the fresh fruit here especially is great. I love tropical fruit: papaya, mango, lychee, rambuton, breadfruit, coconut (which is actually not a fruit or a nut, but a seed).

Jessica- this was actually alot comaired to my selection at other luaus. Well, I guess it's settled. Our blogspot get together will have to be in Hawaii:)

  17. Jill- I was the same way as you before I became vegan. There were quite a few veggies I didn't like. Now though, since that is the majority of my diet, my mind has opened up to lots of new veggies. Bell pepper for instance I used to hate. Now, I quite enjoy it :) I think once you go veg you get more developed taste buds.

  18. I've never been to a luau...the vegan items avaliable (although scant I take it) sound like interesting things I'd love to try.

Your kale/apple/celery combo sounds great! I love celery with apples.

BTW, I've started following your lead and making some morning juices; right now I'm on blueberry/raspberry/spinach/mustard greens because that's what I have in the fridge...but the kale/apple/celery combo is definitely next on the list.

  19. I've never heard of bubble drinks either. Unfortunately, I don't like coffee or tea or anything like that. That actually makes it hard in social situations. I wish I did like them. And I also wished I wasn't as much like the girl sitting across from you. I am usually so stressed out at events like that because I'm worried about what's really in the food, I just don't eat. I wish I could loosen up a bit.

And I would also like to try daikon because I don't think I ever have.

  20. Rose- If you ever come to Hawaii, then we may just have to go to one :) I am glad you have started juicing! Yours sounds yummy too. My favorite things to juice are kale and swiss chard.

Jenny- They are yummy. They have all kinds of flavores. Not just tea or coffee. They have melon, mango, taro, etc. Daikon is good, especially pickled. I get worried too about what is in the food, but I knew these foods were safe. And she wasn't worried about that, she was just picky :) I know her.

  21. Bubble drinks are so wonderful. There is nowhere in my town that sells them and I haven't had luck cooking tapioca pearls myself, so I just have to dose up when I go to the cities.

Is poi the same as taro?

  22. I've never been to a luau either, but these always look fun on tv and in the movies.

  23. Theresa- Do you have a rice cooker? That's the best way to cook the tapioca pearls. Poi is taro but a different version of it. Taro is just the root, some people eat it steamed or boiled in coconut milk. Poi is taro root pounded out into a paste form basically. You can either eat it like that or allow it to ferment (add some probiotics in there.)

Shen- They can be fun. They normally aren't like the movies though unless you pay money and go to a tourist type luau:)
