Master Cleanse

So...I am attempting, key word attempting to start the master cleanse tomorrow. I tried it once before when I was not vegan yet and addicted to coffee. After not even a day, I got an extremely bad migraine. I am thinking it may have been my body going into withdrawal over coffee. Needless to say, I didn't even last a day. It's embarrassing really. I am hoping that now that I am vegan, my body won't go into a super withdrawal. Also, I don't like lemonade. Pray for me guys, pray for me. If any of you have done the cleanse with success any tips or encouragement would be great! I will try to update you as I go. That is...if I go...I especially need tips on getting the salt water down in the morning. For those of you not familiar with the cleanse, here it is in short:

In the morning: Down 1 liter of water with 2 teaspoons of unionized salt water.

Throughout the day: Drink your lemonade mixture every time you feel hungry. The recipe is the following-- 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice, 2 Tbsp grade B maple syrup, 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper & 8 ounces pure water.

At night: Drink a laxative tea like Smooth Move. You may also "cheat" and drink an herbal non-caffeinated tea as well. Just to change it up.

  2. Good luck! I did try this once last year and I want to do it again, but probably when the weather turns warmer.
I don't know about that salt water - I've heard of it but what I read said you could do either that or a laxative tea in the morning, and I opted for the tea since I was drinking it in the evenings anyway and had it around. I've heard the salt bath produces a bowel movement much more quickly than the tea, just so you know!
I also did this as the tail end of a low-cal raw cleanse, so the transition was pretty easy. I actually don't remember feeling hungry often, and when I did the lemonade did help the cravings. That's rough if you don't drink lemonade though!
I definitely felt good at the end of the cleanse, though pretty tired during the days.
Like I said, I plan to do it again so it was an overall good experience, but really - good luck and don't over exert yourself (though I have heard of people exercising and doing yoga on it..)
If you have any other questions or want to talk about it, just email me! (antimaud at hotmail dot com)

  3. How many days are you trying for?

I'm sure you can do it! Just keep thinking of how good you'll feel afterwards. I'll be thinking of you and sending you positive thoughts.

  4. Cleansing sucks. Plain and simple. But the benefits are amazing. The first cleanse I did, I didn't last a day. The next time, I made it two days. Now it is no problem. Your body will crave the cleanse. Be careful not to take it too far, some people become addicted, I use to read a blogger that almost killed herself on accident. Please be careful

  5. good luck! If you are still a coffee addict, then chances are you will get a headache again but it should only last a day. I'm in the same boat as you (coffee addict). Can you cheat the first day and have some black tea after your salt water cleanse? Then on day two you won't get as bad a headache. (I'm a bad influence, see?)

  6. Good luck, and I can't wait to hear about your experience. I've been fascinated by the MC since I read about some people doing it on the Vegan Freak forums. There were mixed reviews on there, but it seemed that the people who ate junky (but still vegan) food immediately before starting had the worse times, whereas people who transitioned to slightly healthier habits in the lead up had an easier go. It seems like you eat fairly healthy food, so hopefully you won't feel too bad!

  7. Not my bag, but I'm the one that told you not to move to Nebraska, so what do I know?

  9. Good luck with the cleanse! I've heard of it, but never done it. I don't think I could do the salt water part....ick. How long are you doing it for? My husband and I are wanting to do a cleanse, but we haven't decided what we are going to do yet. I'm anxious to hear how it works for you. I just ordered Crazy Sexy Diet, so I'm thinking about trying her cleanse. I'll say a prayer for you. :o)

  10. I am not familiar with cleanses, although I did listen a story about one on This American Life. Just be careful and take care of your body!

  11. Best of luck with this! I've been off & on with coffee for several years, so I know all too well how horrendous the first week without it can be. I think drinking so many fluids should help you a lot, though. Keep us updated!

  12. So I am looking for details on how your first day went? I can't remember how long my longest MC was. I think I have done it 3 times over the years. I think the last time about a year ago I went 11 or 16 days? I definitely think it is good for your body to do this once in awhile. Best wishes!

  13. Michelle- I don't know how long. More of a detox I spose. Weight lose wouldn't hurt either!

Maud- Thanks Maud and I might take you up on emailing about it. So far I haven't done the salt water part either and just did the two lax teas a day. Thanks for all the info, I was hoping you would comment since I knew that you did this before:)

Rose- Thank you! And I have no clue yet. I am just doing it day by day for now to see how it goes. Last time I aimed for 10 days and didn't last 1 so I am trying not to set myself up for failure this time around.

Viv- Thanks for the heads up Viv. I will be very careful and listen to my body :)

Steph-Hahaha, I probably could...As long as it was decaf. Good idea bad influence!

Theresa- I think that is probably true, because last time I tried this I was not a vegan and I got a bad migraine and passed out the first day.

Shen- Hahaha, true. I have a feeling you are one of those skinny chicks that couldn't gain weight if she tried though :) But I will never knooooow unless we see a picture :)

Kim- Thanks Kim! My mom has done this cleanse a few times and always feels great after! I normally buy the pills and do those type of cleanses. I wanted to do one for real this time though.

Michelle- Thanks for the prayer :) I have no idea how long I will do it yet. So far I haven't done the salt water thing yet. I can't bring myself to it. I have just been doing two laxative teas a day instead. I have a major gagging problem so I didn't want to try it just yet.

Jess- Thanks Jess. I will. I know when my body has had enough. Usually when I start feeling faint I know I have had enough. I pass out easily. So if that starts, then I'm done :)

Molly- Coffee is a hard one huh? I really love it. I wish I didn't because it would make things so much easier. The only thing that really stops me from getting it all the time is the fact that I know how much acid is in it and I am always trying to reduce my acid intake.

Mom- I just posted how day 1 went for you to see :) I don't know how long I am shooting for. We will just see how I feel. Fudge thinks I am not going to last, meanie :(
