Happy New Year Poi Balls

Before we left Hawaii I bought four of these since I knew there was no way we would be able to get poi in Omaha. For those who do not know, poi is taro. If you still have no clue what I am talking about click HERE. That will explain it. Anyway, this is what I used to make my poi balls.

I posted this picture on facebook and one of my aunties said, oh mushrooms? I didn't even think about it but they do look just like mushrooms! They are suppose to be in ball form, but oh well. This is what my husband requested for New Years, so here it is!

Poi Mochi Balls

1 bag poi
1 cup Sugar
1 + 1/4 box Mochiko four
2 cups Water

Mix poi and sugar until smooth. Add Mochiko and slowly mix while adding water. Continue adding water until batter is consistency of thick pancake batter. Drop by spoonfuls into hot oil. Fry until golden brown. Ta da!

I have been cleaning all day and stopped to finally eat a bite of food.

Apparently, I was being very rude eating in front of people and not offering any.

The pictures are blurry because Sonic is so hyper and moves so quickly. My cutie pie. I don't know what my resolutions will be, but when I do I'll let you all know. Everyone please have a happy and safe new year!

  2. When I read the post title at first, I thought you were calling us Poi Balls, like "Happy New Year" all you Poi Balls out there! I've never had them. It sounds like a nice reminder of home for you guys.

Sonic does look like he's saying "What to you mean by eating without me." in the first photo...so cute! I love the pic of him with his tongue out.

Happy New Year to you and your family, peace, love and happiness in 2011.

PS: I sent your package off today; sorry about the delay. It should arrive next week sometime.

  3. Happy New Year, Carissa!

I like the photo series of Sonic. It's so easy to imagine him popping up toward you to eat from the spoon - too cute!

I have never heard of poi, but I like seeing you find ways to continue traditions in your new home.

  4. I've heard of poi, but never gave anything thought to what is done with it. Never heard of Mochiko flour. The poi balls sort of look like naked donut holes. Sonic stole the blog post. Happy New Year!

  5. Sonic & Rowan have the blurry photo effect in common. It's very hard for me to get her to sit still!

I can't imagine what a difference it must have been for you moving from Hawaii to Omaha. I've never had taro, but I have heard of it. The poi balls do indeed look mushroom like! :)

  6. Happy New year! I love that picture of your dog, haha. My cat gets upset when I eat without her too.
I've heard of taro but I always though poi was some kind of fish! Your poi puffs sound tastier than that.

  7. When I saw the poi balls, I thought they looked like potatoes at first. I've never had poi, and my only experience with taro is Terra Chips which include some chips made from taro. Sonic is so cute. I see that like my dog he starts biting on the spoon when you feed him with one; dogs don't "get" utensils.

  8. Sara- Yes it is basically. I love it. It is fermented powdered taro with water. It is so good for you! People in Hawaii feed it to their babies because it makes them grow up big and strong.

Rose-Haha, poi balls :) Thanks for sending that calender!

Jessica- My sonic is so silly:)

Shen-It does kind of look like donut holes. And Mochiko Flour is Sweet Rice Flour :)

Molly- I am glad I am not the only one with a hyper dog

Foodfeud- I am such a sucker for my animals and always share my food with them when they beg. Moi is a fish! Haha! You were close!

Rachel- Poi and taro is so good for you! Yup, he doesn't get spoons
